We were established as a statutory body under the Comhairle Act 2000.

This Act was amended by:

• The Citizens Information Act 2007, which changed the organisation's name to the Citizens Information Board.
• The Social Welfare and Pensions Act 2011, which amended the rules for membership of the Citizens Information Board.

The Citizens Information Act 2007 also explains:

• How the advocacy service for people with disabilities was developed.
• How the Board sets the terms and conditions for providing information, advice and advocacy services through Citizens Information Services and other voluntary bodies.

In 2008 the Social Welfare (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act 2008 extended these acts to give the Citizens Information Board responsibility for the Money Advice and Budgeting Service.
