Citizens Information Board Irish Language Scheme
We have an Irish Language Scheme under Section 11 of the Official Languages Act 2003, as amended in 2021. The Act aims to improve the availability and standard of public services through Irish. Our scheme sets out actions to increase the level of service we provide in Irish.
What is an Irish Language Scheme?
Public bodies named under the Act must prepare an Irish Language Scheme when requested by the Minister for Rural and Community Development and the Gaeltacht and implement that scheme.
The scheme sets out:
- Services provided in Irish only
- Services provided in English only
- Services provided bilingually
It also outlines the steps the organisation will take to deliver services in Irish or bilingually.
Current Status
Our Irish Language Scheme 2008 - 2011 / Scéim na Gaeilge 2008-2011 remains in place while the review is ongoing. The Department of Rural and Community Development, together with An Coimisinéir Teanga, is developing new Irish Language Standards with public bodies. These standards will replace existing schemes while maintaining the current level of service.ace existing schemes without reducing the level of Irish language services currently provided. They will apply once finalised and implemented.
